Emergency Services Director

Responsible for the administration, direction and coordination of the County’s Emergency Services Department and other related duties as assigned. This is a responsible administrative position. The County Manager prescribes general policies, plans and objectives for the department and advises as to procedures in extraordinary situations but the Director of Emergency Services has control over departmental functions and exercises wide discretion in the administration of the department.

This position will be responsible for the overall supervision of the County’s 911 Center, Emergency Management Services and Emergency Medical Services. Supervision will be exercised both directly and indirectly. Direct supervision will be exercised over the Division Managers/Supervisors of Emergency Management, EMS and 911 Center.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Graduation from High School or GED. Graduation from an accredited college or university with course work in public administration, business administration, public safety, emergency services/management, fire science or related fields.

Experience: Five (5) years of progressively increasing administrative responsibility for a recognized Emergency Services, Fire, Police or Public Safety Department. Three (3) years of this experience should have been at a departmental head level.

NOTE: Those who do not meet the above mentioned college educational requirement may substitute 4 years of experience in an area of public safety administration or emergency services administration at a supervisory level for the college education requirement.

Licenses, Registrations, Certifications and Other Special Requirements

Valid Driver’s License

Availability by pager, cell phone and/or radio 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, every day of the year with the requirement of being present when necessary or required by County Manager

Resident of Dorchester County, Maryland is preferred. Residence must be within 60 minute normal drive time if residing outside of Dorchester County.
